At the northern edge of Plaza Mochado sits one of Mazatlans most notable architectural landmarks, known as the Angle Peralta Theater. Built in the early 1870s, it was the pride of Mazatlan and was originally known as the Rubio Theater.
It was a dramatic turn of events that led to the theater being given the name that it currently carries and the story reads right out of a classic theatrical tragic drama. It was in 1883 that opera singer Angela Peralta, a star of that era, who also was known as “The Nightingale of Mexico” arrived in Mazatlan to give a series of sold out performances at the then the Rubio Theater.
A huge crowd had gathered outside of the hotel where she was staying and she serenaded them with a few songs from the balcony of the suite that she was staying in. However; she was not feeling well after her voyage, so she retired for the evening to get some much needed rest.
Tragically, the impromptu performance from her balcony was her very last. The ship that she had arrived on was carrying yellow fever which she she too had contracted and she died from it shortly there after. 
The entire town of Mazatlan was stricken with grief and in the thros of their collective despair, it was decided that it was divine providence that the Rubio Theater should be renamed in her honor. It functioned for some time there after as the focal point of Mazatlan's theatrical community but the changing times also brought changes to the theater.
It became a movie theater when the technology arrived and then switched to vaudeville for a time. It then put in a stint functioning as a community boxing ring until it was in deed, converted to a parking garage. After being flooded by the hurricane of 1975 it stood empty and gutted until a five year restoration project began in 1987, which returned it to its former grand splendor when it was completed in 1992.
