I agree with your views on the clubs. I was there in February and had a great time at both Hippocompo and Terrandas. Fell in love with Carly at Terrandas, a really sexy lady. Maybe I will see you there this weekend. I will be the big white guy with the Filipino friend. Please say hi if you see us and I would like to buy you a beer and talk more about Mazatlan. (be there Sept 1~6th, 2011)

Thanks,
Martin

[...] This is Stone Island (or “Isla De Piedra” as the locals call it). It’s a stark, comfortable contrast to the hustle and bustle of a place like El Centro or the Golden Zone. [...]

If you are on your Mexico vacation, staying on Mazatlan’s Golden zone, there is some decent Mazatlan surfing within walking distance. Check out the point break at “Punta (point) Camaron” next to Valentino’s disco castle between Playa Sabalos and Playa Marlin. The surf can get fairly large here; it’s not uncommon for there to be a 4-6 foot swell here with a left or right point break depending on where the swell is coming from.

Playa norte...
Small swells mostly, but rideable.

Playa los pinos
There is a point break between North Beach (Playa Norte) and Playa los Pinos beaches that offers some pretty good surfing, long rides if the surf is coming from the right direction. This point is along the boardwalk between the “Fisherman’s Monument and the lighthouse.

Point Camaron
Located at Valentino's disco. Decent surf, pretty good shape.

The best "normal" snorkeling in the area, hands down, is out on the Tres Islas. The islands, especially Bird Island, have beaches, but mostly rocky shores. They are far enough out that the water is much cleaner than in town, extremely so while the spring rains are still sluicing silt out the river and storm sewers. It's almost pointless to get into the merits of such a cool excursion site, but the calm water snorkeling on the land side here is very pretty, and if on the outside can get pretty wild. You can swim around the islands pretty easily, kind of a fun thing in itself, and swim from one island to the other.

Getting there is a lot of the fun. You ride from the Golden Zone beaches to the Islas on a World War II surplus landing craft called a "DUCK" and painted with a huge shark's mouth full of teeth. Take a pic of that home to your blase; buds. Sometimes the DUCK just cruises the beach looking for fares–and it can be pretty weird to look up and see a huge robot land shark heading for you. But they usually just wait for you on the El Cid beach, with hourly departures from 10 AM to like 4 PM, depending on how they are doing it this year. You get in, the shark wallows into the water, switches gears, and putts out to the islands. How cool can you GET?!? Be sure not to miss the last shark back to shore.
